The first and most important component of Harmony Martial Arts' Jiu Jitsu classes is self-defense. This includes many defense tactics to common attacks that one may encounter in an unprovoked altercation, including headlocks, bear hugs, chokes, sucker punches, and more.
The second component includes striking and the ability to clinch or close the distance on your opponent to minimize his ability to kick or punch you.
The third component is the ability to take your opponent to the ground or dealing with the possibility of your opponent taking you to the ground with them. It is important that if the fight is taken to the ground that you end up in the most advantageous position possible (on top), and if not, that you learn to defend yourself from a position of disadvantage (the bottom).
The fourth component and the one that has been popularized by Mixed Martial Arts is ground fighting, commonly known as grappling. The Gracie's showed in the early UFC their unique ability to not only defend themselves but also the ability to submit an opponent who is much larger and stronger while on the ground.
